[PRESS RELEASE ] JAPANESE (MALE) HANDICRAFTS DESIGNER MAKOTO OOZU CHANGES THE WHOLE CONCEPT OF HANDICRAFTS!

The unique combination of Makoto Oozu, a (rather big) man and (rather feminine) cross stitch, gives birth to fresh and funky works that stand out for its humor and unique design.

Young and popular Japanese handicrafts / cross stitch designer Makoto has already released 5 books of pop and modern cross stitch patterns, one of which has been translated into English and released in the USA.

The “Cross stitch Masterpiece Brooch” is a good example of his work (and humor). With few tiny cross stitches (like “pixels”) he creates modern versions of “The Monalisa” or “Girl with a pearl earring”, ready to wear.

Another one is the “Olex!”, it looks like a Rolex but… no! It’s cross stitch again!

The American artist KAWS bought two of these funny watch-looking bracelets while visiting Japan.

Makoto also designs “The Porcelains”, a modern tableware collection.

The power of Makoto’s products is that they don’t leave people indifferent, and that’s exactly what happened with Beams (a large Japanese apparel and accessories company) and the National Art Center (Tokyo). They took note of him, and his products can now be seen in their stores.

But that’s not all! Major companies like Disney, Capcom, Pokemon and Peanuts (Snoopy) wanted Makoto to “redefine” their very well-known characters. Mugs, clocks and badges are some of the collaboration products.

■NOT LAME!

Makoto was having lots of fun doing handicrafts, but he wanted to share it. He wanted to end with the idea that handicrafts is “not cool”, “difficult” or “not worth the time”. How bring cross stitch closer to people? That’s how the “Knit-Shock!!” and the “Knit-Shock!! Kit” were born. With the DIY Kit everybody can make a one-of-a-kind watch in just 2 hours, even if they’ve never thread a needle.

Hand-making something is really special. But if this “something” is cute and pop, original and different, media and magazines take note. And that’s what happened. Featured in media, the Knit-Shock is now available in select shops and fashion accessories shops, popular among young people.

To give a hand-made muffler as a gift is an old tradition in Japan. It has been said by the media that the mufflers would be shortly replaced by Knit-shocks (much easier and faster!). Handicrafts is not lame, anymore.

More than 30.000 units of Knit-Shocks have been already sold in Japan. Now, there is an English version (which includes a larger wristband).

Opening Knit-Shock workshops while traveling the world! That’s Makoto Oozu’s dream.
